Main provenance direction determination with the rose diagram of progradation angle

Abstract:When determining the provenance direction according to the progradational reflection configuration,a qualitative method is mostly applied based on observing many seismic sections.In order to have an intuitive method and operable workflow,we propose an approach to the determination of the main provenance direction with the rose diagram of progradation angle based on the principle of the rose diagram in structure interpretation.We also introduce a drawing method and a workflow of the rose diagram of progradation angle,which includes six steps:determination of central point in prograding bodies,progradation angle measurement on reference seismic sections in the northing direction,progradation angle measurement on reference seismic sections in the parallel direction,progradation angle calculation in the reference direction,progradation angle calculation in other directions,and rose diagram drawing.The main provenance directions of prograding bodies in BZ12 Block in Bohai Bay Basin have been analyzed with the proposed approach.Results show that the main provenance direction of prograding body I is 10°~20° while that of prograding body Ⅱ is 340°~350°,which indicates that the two prograding bodies came from different provenance systems.
